When I worked for Mickey (Rhythm Devils), he wanted to play Comes A Time. I gave him a copy of 5/1/77. He liked the way it sounded and had the band listen to it. They rehearsed it a bunch. It was played as an encore once, but was on the setlist two other times. It never got played due to time restrictions. The good thing about the rehearsals is I recorded every second of them, including the band talking about the 5/1/77 version while they listened to it. There were some great comments. I'll dig them up some time.

Thanks for the insights from both of you. I look forward to listening to all good versions of Comes a Time, as I'm sure many of us do.

Ditto. Really appreciate the insights. (And, Charlie, do dig that up sometime :-) )

I find I'm really drawn to the version on 12/5/71. Much more pared down than the sweet, jazzier versions of 76-77 (though I love those too); to me, 12/5 seems to be all about the soulful vocals and bass line, and when the guitar solo comes in it just sings its little strings out, very plaintively. I like the (apparent) simplicity of that one.

This really has nothing to do w/ this song inparticular but it brings up a conversation I heard w/ Pete Townsend. It was at the making of Tommy and Keith could not get the timing down forwhat ever song it was. Goes to prove that the most polished playeres be session or band members just might not get the timing right, and for a profectionist you call in some one who can hurt feelings be damned....LW

You can hear the push and pull in this song - Even Garcia changes tempo trying to coax a more languid vocal - very tough to play slow - banging away like a banshee on Truckin', Samson & Delilah and Scarlet Begonias is child's play compared to the subtle textures of a song like Comes A Time.
